Established in 2004, the Birthright Israel Foundation is the American fundraising organization supporting Taglit-Birthright Israel trips. To date, the Birthright Israel Foundation has helped to raise funds for more than 200,000 trips to Israel for Jewish young adults between the ages of 18 and 26. For young Jews worldwide, the Taglit-Birthright Israel program has become a profound, shared identity-building experience. The ten-day educational trip offers participants an opportunity to explore Israeli culture, society and landscape while discovering their Jewish heritage firsthand. Each year, funds raised by the Birthright Israel Foundation are used to help send more Jewish young adults on these unique trips to Israel. As demand for Taglit-Birthright Israel trips grows steadily each season, the Birthright Israel Foundation will continue to play an integral role in ensuring the program’s long-term success.
This year, Dr. Miriam and Mr. Sheldon Adelson awarded the Birthright Israel Foundation an extraordinary challenge grant to help increase trip participation in 2009 and 2010. For every new dollar raised in 2009, the Adelson Family Foundation will contribute an additional two dollars; in 2010, every two dollars raised will be matched with an additional dollar. Thanks to this generous grant, the Birthright Israel Foundation is successfully recruiting new donors, expanding its support base and leveraging new gifts to help send more Jewish young adults to Israel.
